Toyota Recalls Over 1 Million Vehicles Worldwide to Fix Airbag Problem

Toyota is recalling over 1 million vehicles worldwide because the airbags could inflate without a crash or fail to work if there is one.

The recall covers about 17,000 Scion xA vehicles in the U.S. from 2004 through 2006. Also affected in Europe, Japan, and other places are the Corolla, Corolla Fielder, Corolla Spacio, Avensis, Isis, Corolla Verso, Avensis Wagon, Sienta, ist, Allex, Wish and Corolla Runx.

The Japanese automaker said an electrical short can damage circuits. It can result in the deactivation of the airbags and seat belt pre-tensioners or it can cause those systems to deploy inadvertently.

Dealers will replace the airbag control unit. Owners will be notified in December.
