Owners of Toyota hybrid models in the U.S. have voiced frustration over delayed software updates intended to correct emissions calibration and occasional safety bugs. Some vehicles have waited months for over-the-air updates that Toyota previously pledged to deploy more rapidly.

Regulators are scrutinizing whether these delays breach recall obligations. Toyota says that software distribution must pass rigorous validation and that future updates will be accelerated. Meanwhile, consumer groups are pushing for stricter oversight of automakers’ software deployment processes.
