Porsche Wants to Develop Synthetic Fuels to Make ICE Cars as Efficient as Electric Vehicles

Countries around the world are forcing automakers to invest in electric powertrains and produce more electric vehicles. While electric vehicles are the main focus, the majority of cars sold around the world are powered by gasoline. It will take a decade for electric cars to catch up with gasoline cars in a popularity contest. Rather than looking to completely replace a gasoline car, Porsche is working on a synthetic fuel that will make the internal combustion engine as clean as an electric car. The German automaker's synthetic fuel is called eFuel. They are manufactured using renewable energy to extract hydrogen from water and capture the element with carbon dioxide. The result is a liquid that burns similar to gasoline, but is produced in a more climate-friendly way. eFuel is also expected to emit fewer nitrogen oxides and fewer particulates than gasoline from crude oil. The Porsche eFuel can be loaded into a gasoline car without the need for major engine adjustments. eFuel is not only for road vehicles, but also for racing cars, because the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup can use synthetic fuels.
