Tesla Co-founder Plans to Become the World's Best Battery Recycler with a New Company

JB Straubel, speaking at TechCrunch Mobility Sessions' virtual conference this week, said he wants to make Redwood Materials the world's leading battery recycler and one of the largest battery materials companies. The company was founded by Straubel in 2017. In addition to Tesla, electric vehicle battery manufacturers, including China’s CATL and South Korea’s LG Chem, are increasing production to meet the growing demand from carmakers. This increase in production creates more opportunities for battery material recycling. Redwood Materials will recycle more than 1 gigawatt-hour battery waste from Tesla's huge Nevada plant this year, enough to power more than 10,000 Tesla cars.
