General Motors Forms an Alliance with Japan's Honda and will Jointly Develop Vehicles for North America

US automaker General Motors (GM) announced that it is forming an alliance with Japan's Honda Motor Co to develop electrified vehicles as well as new powertrain technologies. As part of the partnership, the two manufacturers will share vehicle platforms for all-electric and combustion engine models. The partnership may include a range of new vehicles sold under each company's independent brands, as well as cooperation in purchasing, research and development, and connected services. This alliance will help the two companies accelerate their investments in future mobility innovation by freeing up additional resources. Given our strong history of collaboration, the companies would gain significant synergies in the development of the current vehicle portfolio, said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors. As part of the proposed alliance, Honda and GM will collaborate on a variety of vehicles for North America. GM said that discussions on co-development planning will begin immediately, with engineering work beginning early in 2021.
