Mazda MX-5 celebrates the 30^th Anniversary with New Edition

When a car has been on sale for longer, and with more serious success than the classic models from which it took inspiration, it is pertinent to redefine what an icon is.

Many years ago Mazda decided to create a classical, two-seat, lightweight sports car. It seems reasonable to argue that MX-5 derived its stylish inspiration from Lotus Elan and mechanical cues from the old MG.

Interestingly, neither of these primogenitor cars saw their 30^th birthdays while still in production. The MGB lasted 17 years and the Lotus Elan was on sale for mere 11 years. The Mazda Roadster has now, by far, has surpassed them both.

It is a fact that Mazda has long since surpassed the cars that inspired it.
