How does Going Through a Car Wash Affect our Car? Is it Better to Clean It with a Gun?

The automatic car wash seems to be a fantastic alternative when it comes to cleaning our car. Save time and hassles. However, experience has shown that using them can do more harm than good. They can discolor and scratch the bodywork, and have even been shown to seriously affect car sensors.

How does the Car Wash Damage the Car Body?

Passing the car through the car wash is similar to painting the car with a wet sandblast. The problem isn't really in the roller bristles, so it doesn't matter if the establishment uses them or instead uses giant, flexible foamy sponges. Why? Let's take an example: an SUV comes from the field covered in mud and its owner decides to remove the dirt in one of the aforementioned car washes. The mud and sand are mainly made up of small pieces of rock, including granite, which is extremely hard and abrasive. That grit tends to stick to the tunnel cleaning device, which after a while maybe similar to sandpaper. The high speed of rotation of the rollers together with the high pressure of the water is responsible for rubbing the bodywork of the next vehicle that enters the tunnel. Consequently, scratches appear. Automatic car washes have been gradually replacing abrasive brushes with fabric, but it continues to absorb dirt that prints on other vehicles.

In older cars, a protective film used not to be applied along the body, unlike what is already a standard in the automotive industry. This thin clear coat not only protects the paint from surface scratches, but it also adds shine. When this coating begins to wear off, it is the time when the paint begins to look more opaque and scratches can appear more easily. So, the rollers in a car wash, scrubbing all its dirt on the car body, will cause thousands of micro-scratches, also called spider or swirl for quite logical reasons. Over time, this damage accumulates, exponentially worsening the look of our car. The repair of these marks is done through a paint correction process, that is, by polishing it. This process reduces the thickness of the paint layer to level it with the scratches seen on the surface. It is a method that can be applied several times during the useful life of a vehicle, since, normally, there is usually enough margin between the last coat of paint and the sheet metal.

Is Pressure Gun Washing Better?

Pressure gun washing has the advantage that there is no physical contact. Just use a jet of pressurized water mixed with detergents that are thrown into the car. With this method, the chance of worrying about cosmetic damage is less . Yes, it is slower than going through the car wash and even more expensive. And instead of an industrial dryer, you will have to use a rag if you want to get a good result, but it is worth it. If the gun water pressure is too high, it can also damage the car paint. As there is no contact with the body surface, more pressure is required, ergo the car paint also suffers. Never use a pressure washer gun attached to the body. In addition, many of these machines use even more abrasive components in their soaps than car washes in order to remove any remaining dirt.
