Symptoms of a Hole in Your Muffler or Exhaust

All combustion engine vehicles with an exhaust system are equipped with a device called as muffler, it is also known as silencer in some areas of the world. This device is designed and made to last the lifetime of the vehicle. But if you are driving in harsh weather areas where weather is extremely cold and road salt is used or near the ocean, It cause corrosion on the inner surface of the muffler which develop holes in the metal sheet of the exhaust and vehicle become noisy. In this article we will discuss about the common symptoms of hole in your vehicle exhaust.

Top 4 Symptoms of Holes in Muffler:

1 Loud Noises:

Loud noises of the vehicle is presenting symptom when there is a hole in the muffler, the main function of the muffler is to reduce the sound of the vehicle and because of hole in the muffler, it fails at his job which means that the sound of the vehicle will be much louder as compared to the normal condition.

2 Carbon Monoxide:

Muffler prevent carbon monoxide (which is produced as result of combustion) going to the cabin where everyone sits. But if there is a whole in the muffler then the carbon monoxide get leak in the cabin, as we all know that the carbon monoxide is also known as silent killer because it doesn’t has smell, color or taste. Instead you can just feel its presence by its effects like it causes dizziness, tiredness, headaches and difficulty in breathing. If you breathe for too long it can even cause death.

3 Emission Test Failure:

As I told you above that it is very difficult to examine the amount of carbon produced by the engine of the vehicle that is way in many states of the world, authorities are using instruments to measure the exact amount of carbon dioxide emission from the vehicle. But if you have holes in muffler then you will not be able to pass the emission test failure because gasses get leaked unprocessed by catalytic converter in the exhaust.

4 Rust Holes:

Normally muffler has small holes which are known as weep holes. The function of these holes is to drain the water from the inside space of the muffler to avoid corrosion, if you see holes other than the weep holes then it means your muffler is damaged due to rust.
