How to Touch Up Your Car's Paint

If the paint on your car is damaged, save money by touching it up yourself. These tips can help you achieve professional results.

To Have the Right Shade:

  • First of all, you need to purchase a paint color that matches that of your vehicle.
  • Getting the right shade can be trickier than it looks.
  • To get started, open the hood of your vehicle and check the paint code number on the piece of metal that separates the engine and cabin from the car.
  • If your car is relatively old or has a badly weathered paintwork, you may not be able to get a perfect match.
  • Test in an inconspicuous place to verify the results.

Buy a Primer:

  • Purchase a primer along with your paint, unless the paint manufacturer's instructions say you don't need it.

Treat Rust Before Painting:

  • If the area you want to paint is rusty, you should apply a rust remover before applying the paint or primer.
  • This will prevent rust from continuing to spread under the new coat of paint you will be applying.

Sand the Area:

  • # 220 sandpaper is a good choice for sanding metal so that the primer adheres well.

Wash and dry:

  • Clean the area with water to remove dirt, wax, rust remover, or any other residue.

Prime the surface:

  • Apply as little primer as possible so that the coat is thin.
  • The primer allows the paint to adhere to the metal and gives you the professional results you desire.
  • Primer is especially necessary if you have a deep shine. It will fill and level the surface.

Test the color of your paint:

  • Test a dab of your chosen paint in an inconspicuous area.
  • You can check if its color matches the original color of your vehicle.
  • In addition, this will allow you to make sure that there will be no reaction between the existing paint and the new paint.

It's Time to Apply!

  • Mix your color well.
  • Start the application.
  • Some automotive paints are sold with brushes and others are sold as pens.
  • Whatever paint style you choose, apply enough paint to evenly cover the area.

Let the Paint Dry:

  • It is best to let it dry for at least 24-36 hours.
  • Then wax and polish the vehicle to incorporate the new paintwork into the old one.

That's all! You did a pro job!
