How to Haggle for a Used Car

You have done your research and found a used car that you want to buy. Now, what to do next? It is the time to negotiate and make a deal. You can call it haggling. But, negotiating for the price should not be an uncomfortable experience, you have to make the case for the numbers you have in mind.

  • Bring Your Research

Research is important in the used car buying process. Even choosing your favorite car needs research. Similarly, do research about the car price on from reputable sources. You can easily find online platforms that can show you the market price for a particular vehicle.  Show them the resources you have found and ask why the selling price is higher than the market price.

If the dealer does offer you the explanation for the added value you are getting for the extra cost, it is better to move on to the next dealership.

  • Ask a Mechanic

Car inspection is the most important task that is needed to make it sure that you are buying what you are paying for. Bring up a mechanic with you to check the vehicle for what it has listed to be.

Performing car inspection by a mechanic will not only let you know what needs to be fixed but also how much it will cost. Make it sure that mechanic you choose is trustworthy. Depending on the estimated cost of the repairs, you may or may not get discount for the work required.

If you find that vehicle is well below the condition stated on the listing, it is better to move on.

  • Look Beyond the Sale Price

Suppose the dealer has agreed to your proposed price.  It is not the end of the negotiation. You can find other opportunities for saving including trade-in-price, financing, and add-ons.

When it comes to trade-in you can show your research to the salesperson. Show the person the value of your car from the sources you have searched online compared to the other cars in your area. If the dealer insists on a lower price, ask for the explanation.

If you need financing, you can contact your bank or credit union or a credit union can offer better terms.

You can take the advantage of add-ons if you cannot reach your ideal price and you want the car badly. Ask the dealer for add-ons at no extra cost.

  • Keep Your Cool

It can take hours to purchase a vehicle. You need to be prepared to move on after spending so much time if you feel that negotiation is hitting the wall. But, do it calmly.  You need to keep cool before making a final decision.
